“Don’t Cast Your Lot in With Everyone”

A Biblical Warning About Following the Crowd

In every generation, there is pressure to go along with the crowd.  Culture, peers, and even well-meaning friends can influence us to walk paths that are not pleasing to God.  The Bible gives a clear warning about joining ourselves with people simply because “everyone else is doing it.”

Proverbs 1: 10-15 (KJV) says:

“My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.  If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood…Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse: My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path.”

This passage paints a powerful picture.  Wicked men invite others to “cast in thy lot among us.”  In other words, join our group, do what we do, live as we live.  But the instruction from wisdom is clear: “Consent thou not.”

God’s people are called to be set apart, not swept along by the crowd.

  1. The Crowd is Often Moving in the Wrong Direction

The majority is not always right.  In fact, Scripture repeatedly shows that the crowd often moves away from God rather than toward Him.

Jesus said in Matthew 7: 13-14 (KJV):

“Enter ye in at the straight gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat.”

The broad road is crowded.  It is popular and socially accepted.  But popularity does not equal righteousness.  Many people follow a path simply because others are walking it.

As believers, we must learn that numbers do not determine truth.

2. Joining the Wrong Crowd Corrupts Character

Scripture teaches that association influences behavior.

1 Corinthians 15:33 (KJV): “Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.”

When we “cast our lot” with people who disregard God, their attitudes, values, and behaviors will slowly influence us.  Sin rarely begins witha dramatic fall.  It usually begins with small compromises through wrong associations.

Lot is a powerful biblical example.  He pitched his tent toward Sodom (Genesis 13), then eventually lived inside the city. What began as proximity eventually became participation.

Where you place your life determines the direction you will travel.

3. The Fear of Man Causes Many to Join the Crowd

Many people know something is wrong, but go along anyway because they fear rejection.

Proverbs 29:25 (KJV) says: “The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe.”

Standing alone can be uncomfortable. But throughout Scripture, God honored those who refused to bow to the crowd:

  • Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego would not bow to the golden image
  • Daniel would not stop praying
  • Noah built an ark when the entire world mocked him.

Righteous people often stand against the flow of culture.

4. God Calls His People to Walk a Different Path

The believer’s calling is not to blend in with the world but to live differently.

Romans 12:2 (KJV) says: “And be ye not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

To follow Christ means we may have to decline invitations, separate from certain influences, and refuse to participate in things others consider normal.

Holiness will sometimes make you stand out.

But it is far better to stand alone with God than to stand with a crowd that is headed toward destruction.

5. Choose Your Lot Carefully

In the Old Testament, the “lot” represented one’s portion or inheritance.  Spiritually speaking, every person must decide where they will place their life.

Joshua declared:

Joshua 24:15 (KJV): “Choose you this day whom ye will serve…but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

Every day we make choices about:

  • Who we walk with
  • What influences we allow
  • What values we adopt

Those choices shape our future.

The world constantly invites believers to “cast in thy lot among us.” But wisdom still speaks the same words given in Proverbs:

“Consent thou not.”

Do not follow the crowd if the crowd is not following Christ.

Sometimes obedience to God means walking a road that few are willing to travel.  But what narrow road leads to life, peace, and eternal reward.

Stand firm.  Walk with God.  And never cast your lot with those who reject His ways.
